How do I know a locksmith is insured and DBS checked?

Short answer

The UK locksmith trade is unregulated — there's no licence. Ask any locksmith for evidence of public liability insurance and a DBS check before they attend, and be wary of anyone who won't provide it. ASG Locksmith is DBS checked and carries full public liability insurance.

What to ask before they attend

Ask for the trading name and, if it's a limited company, the Companies House number. Ask whether they carry public liability insurance and whether the technician who'll attend is DBS checked. A legitimate locksmith will answer without hesitation.

What to look for on-site

A branded van (not always — many trades run unmarked vans for security reasons), ID on the person attending, and a proper itemised invoice at the end. If the invoice is a scribble on a scrap of paper with a phone number and no company details, that's a red flag.

ASG Locksmith's credentials

The technician who attends is DBS checked. We carry full public liability insurance covering both accidental damage and professional work. We issue itemised invoices suitable for insurance claims. Ask on the phone and we'll email evidence before we set off.
